Back from the DARK

It has been a l o n g 7 and a half days (whose counting!) of living on the Prairie, but we are back and enjoying ELECTRICITY!

Let me just tell you that flushing a toilet has become a luxury and once power was restored, it was the most beautiful sound I've ever heard. I will never take this for granted again. Most of us not living in the "city" have wells. Once the power goes ... so do they! Ugh, double ugh!!!

I have much to share, but will have to wait a day or two until we are back to normal. Thankfully our home is fine but we lost several large branches and our yard is a sea of leaves, small branches and debris.

However, I didn't want to wait to thank those that have emailed me, called or text over the past several days. Sadly, we lost a lot of tower strength and my communication was very limited.

With giddy delight, I introduce my new besties ... the power guys! They are from all over the United States. They are gift giving gentlemen that are working 16 hour shifts far from their families. A big thank you for their hard work and their families for sharing them when our state needs them so desperately. We were told that without outside help, we wouldn't have power for 3~4 months. That should give you an idea of how hard Connecticut was hit by Irene.

When they arrived in our sub division I wanted to kiss them! In fact, I think my husband wanted to kiss them. Actually, there was booth set up and a very long line to show such gratitude! This little *adventure* took its tole on us and taught me a few lessons. I'll share those next.

Hurricane Irene 073

Have a wonderful holiday weekend!
Enjoy those around you ~ that's what's most important.

We lived in Florida in 2004, when we were hit by three hurricanes within one month. We, too, relied on well water, and with three children, no air conditioning, and no flushing (or laundry), it about did me in! We did grill everything in our freezer, go to bed early, and learn to enjoy jigsaw puzzles!

Hi Jo,

So glad that you are back with electricity and I know how grateful you must have been for the power-workers and the urge to feel like giving them a kiss.
We at least on the Island, have a watertank that we can fill a bucket to flush the toilet with.
Hope you will get your garden and everything cleaned up soon.

Happy week
Hugs
Carolyn

I also 'survived' the 2 big hurricanes that hit us here in Fl back in 04 .. 8 days without power the first one and another 5 days during the second hurricane .. it is tough living!
Glad to hear to are all powered up again!

Vive la electricity!
I know the feeling. We had a blizzard here one year and I had 4 children and one 2 month old baby at the time. We had no electricity for a week, but we were able to take everything from our fridge and put it into coolers and sink it in the snow in our backyard. Staying warm at night was a little tricky.
Here's to hoping everything will be back to normal soon.

Jo,
Jon and I have been thinking/worrying about y'all up there. We're so relieved that your power is back on and now you can begin to put things back in order. That is a chore, but it feels good to have some order, after being in an uncontrolable situation.

Take care and I'll look forward to your next posts.

Warmly, Kathleen

I can't even imagine a full day without power. I am so glad you are alright. It's amazing what we take for granted. Let's hope that this is the end of storms that come your way. xoxo

I cannot even imagine what you went through, Jo! I guess I could never have been a pioneer woman- I like to have comforts. We were without power for 2 days last year and it was so strange and eerie. At least we had water, however. That would be such a hardship to endure, with no power. Thank goodness for your angels of mercy who restored things. :-)

SO wonderful catching up today. I know it was an awful ordeal, but I so enjoyed the laughs we shared from it. :)

I can't flush a toilet now without thinking of you...ha! :)

I know exactly what you're talking about. I lived in New Orleans and Houston so we aren't strangers to hurricanes and power outages. The flushing of the toilet becomes the center of topic around the house. Not to mention the heat and becoming creative with meal preperation. I suppose that's why my family never goes camping, Ha!

I'm so happy to hear that you and your family are alright. And that you have POWER!!! WooHoo!!! If I were there I'd do the electricity dance with you.

Sending Big hugs,
Gigi
